Completes Lake Tahoe Century
Over $7000 Raised for The Leukemia
& Lymphoma Society
June 6, 2006 - Thanks to the generous support of so many
friends and family, Michelle and Tom reached their fund
raising goals and were able to participate in America's
Most Beautiful Ride Charity Century. Michelle and Tom
rode all 100 miles of the course around Lake Tahoe in
6.5 hours. Wearing customized racing jerseys, both riders
carried over their hearts the names of thirty-five family
members and friends stricken by cancer.
The event drew more than 3,000 riders, of whom over 1,900
rode on behalf of TNT. Upon completing the event, Michelle
and Tom were presented with medals and century pins to
commemorate their success. But for both riders the real
success was raising awareness and money to help fight
cancer.
With your help, Michelle and Tom raised more than $7,000
for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society through their
participation. Our local TNT teammates raised more than
$50,000. Altogether, Team In Training riders raised a
over $8 million as part of the event. That's $80,000 per
mile! Once again, thank you all for your support..

Death Defying Descent in From Tioga
Pass
June 6, 2006 - On the return trip from Lake Tahoe to Las
Vegas, the team stopped off at Yosemite National Park
in California to allow Tom to attempt a challenging technical
descent. After driving to the top of the pass that enters
the park from the east, Tom mounted his bike to roll down
the 8% grade from Ellery Lake at 9,538 feet to the town
of Lee Vining at 6,781 feet. The road from top to bottom
hugs the side of the mountain overlooking the valley far
below. The thrill-ride descent winds through hairpin turns
without guard rails. Tom descended more than 1,500 of
the total 2,757 foot descent and reached a top speed of
50 mph before dangerous cross winds rocked his bike and
forced him to abandon the attempt. For more on Tom's wild
ride, see his personal rider blog.
Want to Lose Weight? Get a Bike!
June 6, 2006 - If you are looking for a great way to lose
weight, look no further than that old bike in your garage.
A quick review of Tom's heart rate monitor after the Lake
Tahoe century revealed that he burned more than 5,000
calories during the 6.5 hours spent on the bike. During
each of his regular 20 mile training rides, he burned
more than 1,000 calories. Even during his shorter rides,
he burned about 600 calories. All this was in addition
to the calories he normally burned through daily activity.
Studies show that successful dieters expend about 385
calories in addition to the average American's 1,800 calories
burned while working, walking, watching television, etc.
So by taking the bike for a spin five times per week,
Tom burned more than three times the calories of the typical
dieter. The result was a quick, safe weight loss of fifteen
pounds from 200 down to 185 that left him fit and trim.
This enabled him to effortlessly climb the mountains around
Lake Tahoe.
Team Climbs Mount Charleston
May 30, 2006 - The WebFactorE cycling team joined a group
of TNT riders to climb Mount Charleston as part of their
final tune-up for the charity ride in Lake Tahoe. The
nearly 12,000 foot snow-capped peak of Mount Charleston
looms large over the Las Vegas valley. The team used the
climb to gain valuable experience at altitude. Fans of
the team will be pleased to know that Tom was the first
man over the top of each climb. Michelle beat all the
other men and women to finish second over the top.
Team Participates in Ride of Silence
May 17, 2006 - The WebFactorE cycling team took part in
the Las Vegas version of the Ride
of Silence. Held annually, the Ride of Silence is
a silent, slow-paced ride in honor of those who have been
injured or killed while cycling on public roadways. The
event takes place simultaneously across America and in
six other countries.
Team Completes Tour de Summerlin
April 23, 2006 - The WebFactorE cycling team successfully
rode the 80 mile Tour de Summerlin in northwest Las Vegas
on Saturday April 22. The annual event attracts more than
a thousand cyclists from across the western United States.
Wearing their TNT team colors, Tom and Michelle started
the course along with half a dozen team members. After
a few miles, Tom and Michelle latched onto the lead group
and took advantage of their draft to cover the first half
of the course in excellent time. The team faced strong
head winds upon entering Red Rock, but with Tom and Michelle
alternating pulls at the front, they escaped the desert
canyon and rode the last 30 miles back into town in good
form.
Team Tackles Cactus Hugger
in Utah
April 12, 2006 - The WebFactorE cycling team participated
in The Cactus Hugger Cycling Festival in St. George, Utah
on Saturday April 1. The event featured three distances
- 35, 54, and 100 miles. Tom and Michelle rode the 54
mile distance as part of their ramp-up to the century
in Lake Tahoe this June. Both riders distinguished themselves
on the course's hill sections. On Sunday, the team took
a rest ride of just over 16 miles through nearby Zion
National Park. For more on the team's exploits at The
Cactus Hugger click here.
